Task 1
The purpose of the first task is to get students to begin by writing a single sentence. The learning outcome for this task is that Students will use their knowledge of sentence structure to write their own sentence, which they will then self edit. The purpose of this task is to have students individually assess their ability to write a single sentence. The threshold concept to be learned is: how to write a single sentence with proper sentence structure.
Purpose
Procedure
To set up the task, have students separated into three different groups ahead of time. The academic level of the students needs to be considered when creating the groups. Having high level students paired with lower level students will allow for greater knowledge building to occur among the groups as stronger students can help guide weaker students. The first task begins with a group lesson that contains modelling by the teacher. The teacher models what they are looking for, and how to use the technology, in front of the whole class. Students collaborate face to face in this task by brainstorming what it means to edit a sentence. The rest of the task will be completed individually, in order to set up for the asynchronous collaboration in Task 2. The link below will take you to a detailed lesson plan for Task 1.
Assessment
The assessment for this task is formative and based on face to face observations within the classroom. Teachers can observe students writing their sentences, and make notes on those students who struggle, and those who are able to write a sentence with ease. Additionally, teachers have the ability to view the Google Slides, and they can assess the student's ability to write a sentence to match the picture once the student has completed Task 1.
Scaffolding
The lesson begins by the teacher modelling the correct way to write a sentence. After this, scaffolding will be done on an individual basis. Teachers are able to circulate the room as students are writing their sentences, thus additional instruction can be provided to those students who are struggling to write their sentences.
